Prevalence and serological detection of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157 serogroup in commercial cattle farms in Kaduna State, Nigeria

Methods: A total of 240 faecal samples were obtained from eight randomly selected commercial cattle farms and then placed in tryptose soya broth (TSB). Thereafter, the faeces were inoculated onto sorbitol MacConkey agar (SMAC) to identify non-sorbitol fermenting (NSF) colonies, and then sub cultured onto eosin methylene blue agar (EMB). Escherichia coli O157 agglutination test for the identific...

Antimicrobial resistant coliform bacteria in the Gomti river water and determination of their tolerance level

UNLABELLED The distribution of resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, tetracycline, and streptomycin among coliform in the Gomti river water samples was investigated. The coliform populations were isolated on Mac Conky and eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar plates supplemented with antibiotics. The incidence of resistance among the coliform population varied considerably in diffe...

Comparison of commercially available kits with standard methods for the detection of coliforms and Escherichia coli in foods.

Three commercially available kits that were supplemented with substrates for enzyme reactions were evaluated to determine their abilities to detect coliforms and fecal coliforms in foods. Japanese and U.S. Food and Drug Administration standard methods, as well as two agar plate methods, were compared with the three commercial kits. A total of 50 food samples from various retailers were examined...

Effect of visible light on progressive dormancy of Escherichia coli cells during the survival process in natural fresh water.

Some effects of visible light on the survival of Escherichia coli in waters of the Butrón river were studied by comparing illuminated and nonilluminated systems. The following count methods were used: CFU on a selective medium (eosin-methylene blue agar), CFU on a medium of recuperation (Trypticase soy agar with yeast extract and glucose), number of metabolically active cells by reduction of 2-...
